  • Must be a resident of one of the five boroughs in New York City

  • Must be 13 to 22 years old

  • Maximum of TWO pages

  • Only one submission is allowed

  • All work must be original; Plagiarized work will be disqualified 

  • Work must be related to the theme and prompt of the contest

  • Any form of writing and creative writing is allowed:​

Jazmine Hughes is a Metro reporter for the New York Times and a staff writer for The New York Times Magazine, where she worked as a staff editor for five years. She began her career as a fact-checker at New York Magazine and served as a contributing editor of The Hairpin, before becoming an associate editor at The New York Times Magazine. In 2018, Forbes named Hughes to its 30 under 30 list for media. She then the ASME NEXT Award for Journalists Under 30 in 2020.

Jason Kim

Jason Kim is a Korean-born dramatist, producer, and screenwriter based in New York City. In television, he has written for HBO's Barry and Girls, as well as the Netflix series, Love. His work has been presented at Ma-Yi Theater, Keen Company, Naked Angels, The Flea, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington National Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Manhattan School of Music, Spoleto Festival, Opera America, and others. He is an IFP—Marcie Bloom Fellow in Film, a Screenwriters Colony Fellow, a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellow for New Americans, an Opera Genesis Fellow, and a Librettist Fellow in American Opera Project’s Composers & The Voice.
